Welcome back Haughmond!

It is lovely to see you all back at school. I’m looking forward to getting back to lots of fun activities!

This term our main topic is going to be History based, and we are going to be travelling back in time to the first 20 years of the 20th Century. We will begin by learning about the Titanic disaster, before moving on to learn about WW1. We will find out about a number of important people who helped with the war effort, but are perhaps not the most well-known. In other areas of learning we will also be exploring the weather, materials, Hinduism and religious festivals. In Computing, we will begin the term by learning about the importance of staying safe when using technological devices and in music we will be learning about and responding to some famous pieces of music, starting with Mars by Gustav Holst. In Art we will be learning about the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, which will link to our learning about Poppies and after half term we will be making bridges for the characters in our English book for our DT learning.

In English our main texts will be Troll Swap and The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. There will be a Guided Reading session for the class every day, focusing on the books The Troll by Julia Donaldson and Above and Below by Patricia Hegarty. Individual reading books will only be swapped by a member of staff in Haughmond. All the books will be left for a period of at least 72 hours before they are given out to another child. We will continue to have weekly spelling tests, but for the time being spellings will be online rather than coming home in a book. Homework will also be set online each Friday, using some of the sites children became familiar with when school was closed.

In Maths we are continuing with our Mastery Approach to our learning and will be starting this term by ensuring we have a really good understanding of Number and Place Value before moving on to calculations. We will also be practising our times tables and number bonds each week so that we can secure these facts and use them to base our other learning on.

P.E. will be with Shrewsbury Town in the Community and will be on a Monday morning and a Thursday afternoon, starting the week of the 7th September. Children need to come into school in their P.E. kit on those days please.

As always, my door is open for any queries you may have, albeit metaphorically this term! However, if you would like to get in touch with me, please don’t hesitate to give Mrs Winwood a call in the school office to organise this.

I look forward to working with you and your children.

Mrs Gregory.

Open the Book Worship

Rev. Hannah, Rev. Mary-Lou and Pat have been busy thinking about how they can share Worship with us while we aren’t all in school together. They have made this video to share an Open the Book story, a prayer and a song with us all.

End of Half Term Post

It is the end of a very different half term at Bomere Heath CE Primary School. We can now reflect on what we have all achieved and say thank you to many others.

As you know, school has been open to a small number of pupils, who have been working hard all half term with the staff.

We would like to say well done and thank you to all pupils for their hard work, resilience and determination to complete their home learning. We know it is hard at the moment, but we must continue to find the positives and stay safe.

We would also like to say thank you for the support given by the parents and carers of our school. We know it has been a challenge in so many ways, but we fully appreciate your communication, teaching and understanding.

Prayer:

A prayer for family life

God of compassion,
whose Son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary,
shared the life of a home in Nazareth,
and on the cross drew the whole human family to himself:
strengthen us in our daily living
that in joy and in sorrow
we may know the power of your presence
to bind together and to heal;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen.

Helpful Support from BEAM

We have received some very useful leaflets from BEAM, who are operated by The Children’s Society and offer young people the chance to talk with a practitioner about managing their feelings.

We urge you to read the leaflets, as they include helpful ideas about talking to your child about coronavirus and managing transitions.

Virtual School Games

Every year, pupils from across Shropshire, including Bomere Heath, attend the School Games, where they compete in a range of sports and challenges.

The event has been cancelled this year, but we are pleased to say that the organisers (Energize Shropshire) have arranged a “Virtual School Games”!

Here is some more information:

  • #VirtualSTWSchoolGames is a competition for any primary school age children across Shropshire and Telford & Wrekin
  • In the six weeks from week beginning 18th May to 22nd June, six sport-specific personal best challenges will be released, one each week
  • Energize are looking for children to enter by sending videos and photos of them undertaking the challenges (all with parental / carer consent)
  • Along with the sport-specific personal best challenges they are also looking for talented acts for our virtual opening ceremony and are inviting children to send videos of them performing their talents.
  • The week beginning 29th June will be Shropshire Homes Virtual School Games Celebration Week and they will kick it off with the ‘virtual’ warm up and opening School Games has Got Talent acts
  • They will review all entries that week and announce winners for each challenge on Friday 3rd July

This is a great opportunity for children across the County to get active, have fun and get recognition with participation certificates, and winners’ medals, wrist bands and t-shirts.

So, look out for the weekly challenge and get involved!
