Wrekin Learning – Monday 11th May 2020

Good morning! I hope you had a pleasant Bank Holiday weekend, including celebrating VE Day on Friday!

Did anyone see the Red Arrows flying over London? It was amazing!

Here are some learning activities for you today:

Have a fab day,

MrF

Wrekin Learning – Thursday 7th May 2020

Good morning Wrekin class!

I hope you are all well and feeling safe and happy. I will set your work today in maths and then a small project about VE Day – which hopefully you will be celebrating in some way tomorrow! I am setting fewer subjects so you can focus on understanding VE Day – the government thinks it is very important so dedicated tomorrow to it (Bank Holiday). It’s just a shame that we can’t hold street parties and parades. If you know somebody in your family or close to your family who was alive on VE Day, why not give them a call and ask them about it!

So, your links today:

I will not be setting work on VE Day/Bank Holiday, but if you feel inspired, please continue to work on your VE Day project.

Best wishes, enjoy finding out about VE Day!

Wrekin Learning – Wednesday 6th May 2020

Good morning! I hope you enjoyed the sunshine yesterday. I also hope you managed to have a go at designing a fitness plan, which I could share with the class.

The weather will be even warmer today, so make sure you get your sun cream on if you are out!

The coronavirus has affected many businesses, but one type of business which is really struggling is zoos. Here is an interesting article about how zoos are copinghttps://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52483218

So, some work for the day:

Have a lovely day everyone. Is anybody growing anything? Let me know!

Mr F

Wrekin Learning – Tuesday 5th May 2020

Bonjour! Bonjour!

I do hope that all of you and your families are feeling happy and safe. There’s good news this week: that lovely warm sunshine will return! https://www.bbc.co.uk/weather/sy4. But be warned – Sunday will be rather chilly for this time of the year – just 9 degrees!

  • Joe Wicks, as you may know, has had another operation on his wrist/hand. This has meant that his wife has been helping him – basically, Joe does all the talking and Rosie does the demonstration – it works well! https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1
  • At a local school, one of the teachers has been challenging the pupils to do a series of workout/exercise plans. For example, doing a 1km walk, 50 star jumps, 20 squats, 10 minutes on a  trampoline and planking for 1 minute on Day 1, then increasing this during the week. So, my challenge to you is to create an exercise plan for a day, then send it to me and I can then post them on this website, to share with your friends! Can you come up with a brilliant exercise plan?
  • English today is all about prepositions and a fun session about personification.
  • Year 5 maths is multiplying 4-digit by 2-digit numbers, and Year 6 is ordering fractions.
  • And, in Geography, here is a lesson I think is very interesting about global trade and activity for all of you budding entrepreneurs out there!

Please make time to stop and think about how you feel and if you have any worries. Please talk to your parents and carers. Some of you are staying in touch, I know, by using video calling and gaming platforms, which is fantastic (but remember your -e-safety rules!). If you want some advice or read about something to help your worries or anxiety visit this site from Childline. As an extra activity, if you want to come up with a ‘5 top tips’ poster, I’d love to see them, and I can share them on here so you can help your friends!

Have a good day, enjoy a bit of sunshine!

Wrekin Learning – Monday 4th May 2020

Good morning all! I hope you’ve had a great weekend! Mr F and his family have been using their bicycles, going for walks regularly and playing some cricket and football. I hope you have been able to keep active too!

TTRS Result: Year 5s won by about 1000 points! Trent high-scored for Y5, whilst Axel and Ash did really well for Y6. I have set up this battle again – can Year 6s beat Year 5?

Apparently it’s Star Wars Day – May 4th. I also hear that the new Star Wars film is released to watch at home today – if you have been anticipating this, I hope you enjoy it! https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52514904

So before you go and watch Star Wars, here are some learning activities to enjoy:

  • Go to TT Rock Stars for THE NEW BATTLE!
  • Year 5 maths is multiplying using the area model, whilst Year 6 maths is simplifying fractions.
  • I always like children to write super setting descriptions in their fiction writing – so here is your English for today from Bitesize Daily
  • Remember to read the latest chapter on Fiction Express and you can also read any of the previous books they have published
  • Your other activity today is from Code Club where you can follow step-by-step instructions to code some great projects. Some of you have already completed these in Code Club with me, so you could go onto Module 2

Have a fun day everyone – keep smiling, keep chatting!

Mr F

Wrekin Learning – Friday 1st May 2020

It’s May! Welcome to May! I hope everyone feels like they have had a good week.

Here is some work to keep you busy until the weekend:

Have a lovely weekend! I know some of you have been keeping in touch – I was so pleased to hear this! Keep in touch, but make sure you are using any apps or devices safely and responsibly (your e-safety skills are excellent – use them wisely!)

Mr F

Wrekin Learning – Thursday 30th April 2020

Good morning Wrekin class! It’s a bit brighter here this morning!

I have been sat at my kitchen window a lot recently, quietly watching the birds – we’ve not really spent much time in the past just sitting and watching the garden. We have only seen a few different species of birds – sparrow, starling, pigeon, blue tit and a few buzzards up high – but it has been quite relaxing! Maybe you could find out which birds have been visiting your garden and make a graph!RSPB – Bird info for children

  • Remember to do your bit for your team on https://ttrockstars.com/
  • If you haven’t already read Chapter 1 of your new book on Fiction Express read it here.
  • Year 5 Maths is subtracting decimals with a different number of digits and Year 6 is more problem solving. I suggest that you could all start with Year 5 and move onto the problem solving if you would like to!
  • In English punctuation work, learn how to use brackets (BBC), hyphens and dashes. This is a revision for some of you – but a great skill to have nonetheless!
  • If you want extra maths, in particular Year 6 pupils, have a go at this work on the order of operations.
  • And finally your topic-based work for today is RE – you may have seen on the news that many Muslims are experiencing a very different Ramadan this year due to the pandemic Newsround – Ramadan, so I thought it would be a really good idea to study Ramadan Ramadan lesson and write a report with pictures/captions etc – I’d love to see your work!

Have a great day!

Mr Field

Wrekin Learning – Wednesday 29th April 2020

Bonjour! I logged onto my Fiction Express student tracker this morning…and well done! Many more of you have been reading the new books! Remember – if you want, you can also read the old books and they have quizzes too!

TT Rockstars Update: Year 5 v Year 6! Rocker “Ash” has really pushed the Year 6s on and they are now in the lead!

Did you do the minute’s silence yesterday to honour the NHS workers and carers who have died during the virus pandemic?

If you have not started to read the new book on Fiction Express – please do so before Chapter 2 comes out on Friday!

Your work today will involve some writing. It is important to keep up with writing whilst school is closed.

  • PE – Joe Wicks! https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1
  • English – Here is a good challenge! We all have our favourite days of the week (and our least favourite!) Could you describe the days of the week as if they were people? Think carefully about how each day of the week feels different (you usually have routines where you may prefer some days to others). Send them in – I am intrigued to find out how you have done this task!
  • English punctuation work – https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z73sf4j – How to use an ellipsis
  • Maths Year 5s are adding decimals with varying numbers of digits, whilst Year 6s are taking on the challenge of problem solving – you may do both if you wish!
  • Science: Mixing, dissolving and separation: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/articles/z6pyvk7

Have a fantastic day,

Mr Field

Wrekin Learning – Tuesday 28th April 2020

Good morning! It was good to see Boris Johnson back at his desk yesterday – he had a clear message: be patient! You are doing fantastically well, but you may feel like you are fed-up with the restriction on you. As Boris has said, remain patient, continue with your learning and spend time doing things you enjoy within your home with your family!

I know we studied the effect of the wildfires on Australian animals earlier in the school year. You did some excellent writing about it! Newsround has put together a special report about the improvements seen in the wildlife in Australia after the wildfires: https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/52410744 It’s worth a watch – there’s some good news in there!

PLEASE remember this week to read Chapter 1 of the new book on Fiction Express. Year 5 pupils should read The Last Guardian and Year 6s should read Neptune’s Trident. Also, please do the quiz and the vote closes TODAY for what happens in the next chapter! Only 3 of you have read these so far! Please read them this week as they are fab books and Chapter 2 is out on Friday!

TT Rockstars Update: Year 5 are winning by 700 points! Lots of you have been on there – well done! “Trent” is the top Year 5, whilst “Axel” is leading the way for Year 6!

Have a fab day – you are all superstars! Keep up the great work!

Mr F

Wrekin Learning – Monday 27th April 2020

Hey all! I hope you’ve had a pleasant weekend! We finally got some rain – it was long overdue and we did need it on the gardens! This week will be wetter and cooler than we’ve seen in a while.

I know that you have been trying hard on the White Rose Maths. There were a few tricky questions on the Friday Challenge – we have not covered how to approach some of those later questions! I should have told you that the Friday Challenges are given to all year groups up to Year 10 – so they get tricky rather quickly! If you can get to Challenge 4/5/6, that’s great! I’m sorry if anyone got worried about their maths on Friday.

I have set a Year 5 vs Year 6 battle on TT Rockstars! Who will win? It opens today until Friday – I will reveal the results next week!

So onto today’s work!

Did anyone watch Primate on BBC last night? It was quite remarkable! There were some amazing, and some quite strange, primate behaviours going on! It’s worth catching up on iPlayer.

Have a great day – it seems strange I won’t be seeing you – as I would usually be preparing you for SATs tests this week, but keep you heads held high and put your efforts into your work and enjoying your family time!
