Grinshill class – Spring Term – Overview
This is an overview for the term, this follows on from my post last week.
To clarify, PE kit needs to be worn on Thursday and Friday. On Friday a full swimming kit is needed; costume or trunks (NOT BIKINI), towel, goggles (If required), swimming hat for girls or hair tied up, plaits normally work well.
Kind regards,
Mrs Roberts – Class Teacher

Egypt Day – Grinshill Class
What a fabulous day Grinshill class have had today. We welcomed Kat and Sue from ‘Widget Workshops’ to deliver a full day of Egyptian activities.
The children have virtually visited Egypt with their own VR headsets, where they were able to look around tombs, statues, The River Nile, pyramids and many others.
They worked as scribes writing hieroglyphics using traditional writing implements and natural inks.
They worked as embalmers, pulling organs out of bodies and putting them into the correct canopic jars.
They played traditional board games.
As well as learning even more interesting facts about Egypt.
The children have really loved having our visitors in school today and have had an amazing day. The children have enjoyed dressing up as Egyptians.
Welcome back Haughmond!
It is lovely to see you all back at school. I’m looking forward to getting back to lots of fun activities!
This term our main topic is going to be History based, and we are going to be travelling back in time to the first 20 years of the 20th Century. We will begin by learning about the Titanic disaster, before moving on to learn about WW1. We will find out about a number of important people who helped with the war effort, but are perhaps not the most well-known. In other areas of learning we will also be exploring the weather, materials, Hinduism and religious festivals. In Computing, we will begin the term by learning about the importance of staying safe when using technological devices and in music we will be learning about and responding to some famous pieces of music, starting with Mars by Gustav Holst. In Art we will be learning about the work of Georgia O’Keeffe, which will link to our learning about Poppies and after half term we will be making bridges for the characters in our English book for our DT learning.
In English our main texts will be Troll Swap and The Owl Who Was Afraid of the Dark. There will be a Guided Reading session for the class every day, focusing on the books The Troll by Julia Donaldson and Above and Below by Patricia Hegarty. Individual reading books will only be swapped by a member of staff in Haughmond. All the books will be left for a period of at least 72 hours before they are given out to another child. We will continue to have weekly spelling tests, but for the time being spellings will be online rather than coming home in a book. Homework will also be set online each Friday, using some of the sites children became familiar with when school was closed.
In Maths we are continuing with our Mastery Approach to our learning and will be starting this term by ensuring we have a really good understanding of Number and Place Value before moving on to calculations. We will also be practising our times tables and number bonds each week so that we can secure these facts and use them to base our other learning on.
P.E. will be with Shrewsbury Town in the Community and will be on a Monday morning and a Thursday afternoon, starting the week of the 7th September. Children need to come into school in their P.E. kit on those days please.
As always, my door is open for any queries you may have, albeit metaphorically this term! However, if you would like to get in touch with me, please don’t hesitate to give Mrs Winwood a call in the school office to organise this.
I look forward to working with you and your children.
Mrs Gregory.
