Stiperstones Work – Monday 20th April to Friday 24th April 2020

Hi everyone!

I hope you have all had a lovely Easter break and have done lots of fun activities at home and have enjoyed being in the garden in this lovely weather!

From now on, each week there will be daily maths lessons, which can be accessed through this link:

Year 4 – https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-4/

Year 5 – https://whiterosemaths.com/homelearning/year-5/

There is one lesson per day, and please stick to this, as otherwise you will zoom ahead and run out of lessons to do!

Once on that link, you should find the Summer term week 1 section, and then follow each lesson for that week- lesson 1 will be for Monday, lesson 2 will be for Tuesday etc.

Then the following Monday there will be a new week to access with another 5 lessons.

For each lesson, watch the lesson video on the left, and then click ‘Get the activity’ button on the right, complete the activity and then click the ‘get the answers’ button to check your work – remember you can diddy dot or tiny tick and then make corrections underneath, just like you would in school!

You can complete the maths lessons in your exercise book, however if you are running out of room or If you feel that you need a maths book to complete the work, please feel free to contact school and come to the office to collect one.

For reading, each day you will need to access ‘Fiction Express’ you will all receive a log in to access the website from Mrs Winwood as soon as she can get in touch with people.

Once you have logged on, you will need to access the book online that we will all read together (each week I will choose a new book for you to read). You will read a chapter a day (Chapter 1 Monday, Chapter 2 Tuesday etc.) and then complete a little quiz each day after the chapter (the link for quiz each day will be on the same webpage as the chapter for the book each day).

This is the link to our first book, ‘The Pirate’s Secret’: https://en.fictionexpress.com/book/the-pirates-secret/

You will see there are 5 chapters, one for each day of the week.

There are also some activities and comprehension questions to work through after reading each chapter. Here are the links to each activity booklet for our first book:

(I have amended this post to show links to the actual PDF booklets for each day, rather than links to the website as I understand there were some problems accessing the activities through the website links – I hope these new links below will now work for you all. If you have ay problems accessing work, please contact Mrs Winwood at school).

Chapter 1 activities (Monday) – The Pirate’s Secret – Day 1 Work (Monday)

Chapter 2 Activities (Tuesday) – The Pirate’s Secret – Day 2 Work (Tuesday)

Chapter 3 Activities (Wednesday) – The Pirate’s Secret – Day 3 Work (Wednesday)

Chapter 4 Activities (Thursday) –The Pirate’s Secret – Day 4 Work (Thursday)

Chapter 5 Activities (Friday) – The Pirate’s Secret – Day 5 Work (Friday)

Where you see the ‘Quiz’ button for each chapter, you will also see a ‘glossary’ button. This will help with the meaning of words you may be unsure of.

So each day for reading, you will first read the chapter, then complete the short quiz, then click on the correct activity booklet (above) and complete the comprehension questions and activities.

I am aware that on these activity booklets, they say week 1, week 2, week 3 etc., but we are using those as day 1, day 2, day 3 etc. instead.

For afternoon activities, please access this link, which will take you to Classroom secrets ‘Home Learning Timetable’ – https://kids.classroomsecrets.co.uk/home-learning-timetable/

Firstly, scroll down and make sure you are on the correct week (this week will be week beginning Monday 20th April, then Click on your year group and click on the correct day. This will then give you activities to choose from. You can choose one from each section of the time table. Please try to vary the type of activities you choose, for example, if you choose baking one day, why not choose something different the next day, such as a science experiment! There will be a physical exercise on this timetable each day.

Remember, please ensure that you are still completing the usual daily tasks:

  • Practising your spellings (see our class spelling page of our school website to see your weekly spelling lists) and have a spelling test each week to see how you got on.
  • Also practise your times tables each day, both multiplication and division facts (you can use Times Tables Rock stars for this – the ‘Sound check’ part of Times Tables Rock stars will really help with your speed!).
  • Please also read to an adult each day (this could be the chapter of our book on Fiction Express if you like, as you will need to be reading this anyway, or you can read the book you are reading at home to an adult and read our fiction express books to yourself).

Also, feel free to continue to take part in the Joe Wicks (Body Coach) daily workout if you have been enjoying this, I know I have, especially his fancy dress Fridays! These are still live at 9:00 am each weekday morning and are available to catch up with (if you miss the session) each day on YouTube – https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAxW1XT0iEJo0TYlRfn6rYQ

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact Mrs Winwood via email. Also, please feel free to send in any work or activities or photographs you would like me to see. Mrs Winwood will send them over to me if she receives them by email. I would love to see what you get up to!

Have a great first week, keep busy and have fun!

Stiperstones Work Friday 3rd April 2020 and Easter Homework

Hello everyone!

I hope you have been feeling the benefits of your morning exercise this week, I know I have!

Also, I hope you have enjoyed baking and/or designing your own dream cakes!

Today, I have set a few things for you to do, however these can also be completed over the Easter holidays – I don’t expect you to  do everything today, as there is quite a lot.

On Education City,  there is a Science lesson to remind you of the water cycle, which has been out focus this half term. There is also an activity for you to do based on an aspect of this. You do not have to print the sheet, you can write your ideas in your exercise books. This will get you thinking about you about evaporation and condensation as well, and will test what you can remember! I will set some work about some different aspects of the water cycle after Easter.

For maths – I would like you too keep practising your times tables using TT Rockstars, as well as this, I would like you to access some maths games on Top Marks – they are really fun!

This link (https://www.topmarks.co.uk/maths-games/7-11-years/fractions-and-decimals) will take you to the Fractions and decimals games on Top Marks, but as well as trying some of these,  please try and choose some games to help with things that you find tricky- whatever that may be, for example division, measure, or shape – that is what they are for, to help you precise things you find a bit tricky!

For R.E, I would like you to read the Easter Story (below).

Easter story powerpoint

Once you have read the story, I would like you to create a comic strip or storyboard (we have done these in class and so you should know what they look like, a picture for each part of the story you write) to tell other people why we celebrate Easter as a Christian holiday.

For this task, I will attach below a blank comic strip/storyboard sheet for printing if you have a printer, but if not, don’t worry -you can do this on blank paper or in your exercise books – whatever works best for you! (The link below has 3 different versions of a blank comic strip – so if you decide to use one, you can use the one that works best for you – one has parts of the story written in ready for you to help you).

Easter Story – comic strip storyboard

For Topic, now we have researched the physical geography and the culture for a city in Russia (Perm), I would like you to research the culture of Liverpool, as a city in the UK, as we have already researched the physical geography of Liverpool in class. This will help with the next activity after Easter- to write about the differences and similarities between the two places! You can set out your findings about the culture of Liverpool as a poster, PowerPoint or however you choose!

I have also assigned some Reading Eggspress comprehension and spelling activities for you to work on either today or over Easter.

For English (and a bit of Easter fun!) I have thought of an activity I think you will all really enjoy. Your task is to watch the Easter film ‘Hop’ and write a film review. Think about all the features of a film review that we have learnt in class. – Remember to use an attention grabbing exclamation sentence at the start of your review! Tell the reader the genre of the film, your opinion – what is good, what could be improved, and also the plot (but don’t give away the ending!). Also, remember to include the character and actor names, a rating and a recommendation for who should watch!

When writing your film review, think about the English skills you will use too, such as :

  • fronted adverbials (with a comma!)
  • expanded noun phrases to describe the film
  • verbs and adverbs
  • subordinate clauses (added to a main clause)
  • subordinating conjunctions
  • relative clauses
  • use of brackets

and anything else you can think of that we have been working on in class! Also, remember to use beautiful joined handwriting!

If you are stuck with remembering what some of these things are or how to use them in your writing, then Education city has lots of lessons and activities that can help you if you search for the thing you are struggling with. Also, Twinkl is currently free to use and has lots of good resources that explain things really well – this may be a little tricky to use, so remember to ask an adult to help you get set up on the website . If you are stuck with some of the things to use in your writing, ask a grown up to find the website www.twinkl.co.uk/offer  and  sign up using the code CVDTWINKLHELPS to access a free month. On here you will find things  to help you if you are stuck. For example – if you can not remember about subordinate clauses, then search this on Twinkl, and lots of things will come up to explain what they are and to help you use them in your writing.

Remember these ideas for activities are as well as the usual reading to a  grown up for 15 minutes a day, practising times tables (both multiplication AND division facts) and practising your next spelling lists – it would be good if you could  get up to the final week of the Spellings overview sheets (on the Stiperstones spellings page on the school website) over Easter, as then I can give you a fresh term of spellings after the holidays.

Most importantly, over Easter, remember to have fun, play games, have some time in the garden with your family and stay active! Also, enjoy your Easter eggs everyone!

Miss L-J

Stiperstones Work Thursday 2nd April 2020

Hi everyone!

Today you can continue to work on your Maths – adding and subtracting fractions and also the work on Reading Eggspress.

There is also Russian culture research to continue with, as well as baking or designing a cake. I thought you might like to see what I have been baking.

I made these chocolate chip and cashew cookies yesterday – they are delicious!

Remember to send any photographs you would like me to see in to Mrs Windood – I would love to see what you are all getting up to!

Remember to practise spellings too, and times tables.

I also thought that today you could enjoy some time out in the garden if you can. Yesterday I did some gardening and It was lovely being outside in the fresh air doing some jobs, maybe you could ask a grown up if you could help with some jobs in the garden too?

Tomorrow, The Body Coach P.E session is in fancy dress – this sounds really fun and I thought you could dress up for tomorrow’s exercise too!

Remember to have fun everyone, it is nearly the Easter holidays!

Miss L-J

Stiperstones Work Wednesday 1st April and Thursday 2nd April 2020

Good morning Stiperstones!

I hope you are all enjoying the tasks. If you struggle with any concepts from the activities I am setting on here for you, BBC bitesize is a good website that explains things if you are unsure of what something means or how to do something – so don’t panic if something seems tricky! Also, remember you can always ask a grown up or a sibling for help.

As well as the usual tasks (reading a reading book to a grown up, times tables and spellings) I have set Reading comprehension tasks on Reading Eggs for you (remember to click on Reading Eggspress rather than reading eggs to find it) – You will have either  Year 4 or Year 5 tasks assigned to you.

Also, Attached to this post you will have some practise sheets for Adding and Subtracting fractions (this will be similar to the work on Education City from Tuesday – just a bit more practise for you that you can do in your home exercise books!) There is also an answer sheet for you to check your work after you have had a good go yourselves, or you could ask an adult to check your answers with you. You can work through the reading eggs comprehension and the maths sheets (below) today and tomorrow (Wednesday and Thursday).

Adding Fractions

Subtracting Fractions

I wonder if any of you have tried any baking? Here is a picture of some banana bread I have made at home this week!

Just a little thought, if you do not have the ingredients to do some baking, but like the idea, over the next two days why don’t you draw a design for a lovely cake that you would love to make ? Think creatively! What might your ingredients be ? I would love to see any designs you come up with, I bet they will look a lot more exciting than my cake! Remember you can send in any work you would like me to see to Mrs Winwood’s email address.

I hope your Russian culture research is going well too!

Have fun and keep safe everyone,

Miss L-J

Adding and Subtracting Fractions – Answers

Stiperstones Work Tuesday 31st March 2020

Hi Stiperstones,

I hope you enjoyed The Body Coach work out yesterday morning, carry on with this each morning this week – exercise is a great start to the day! (remember, you can do this any time by finding it on YouTube if you miss the live workout in the morning –  https://www.youtube.com/user/thebodycoach1 ).

Hopefully you were able to access the spelling lists on your spelling page and are practising these – remember keep this up everyday, along with reading to an adult and times tables practise using Times Tables Rockstars!

Today, I have added some more lessons on Education City – adding and subtracting fractions for Maths (watch the lesson first to help you and then you can complete the activity).

I have also added some more Punctuation practise for English and a spelling activity involving homophones (remember, these are words that sound the same but are spelled differently!)

Enjoy, and I am looking forward to seeing some of your baking skills and some Russia research throughout the week!
